Avian influenza, or bird flu as it is most commonly known, is a viral disease that has been ravishing Asia, as well as other countries, for more than two years now. Some choose to ignore the threat, but most health experts agree what we see now in the Eastern Hemisphere could be witnessed soon all across the world. Since the first outbreaks of bird flu recorded in late 2003, there have been more than 140 deaths world wide and entire poultry populations decimated. Some estimates claim a flu pandemic (world wide epidemic) could infect hundreds of millions and cause major social disruption.
With these worries in mind, the United States have closely followed the situation and with general fears that the disease could spread to their territory as well, federal and local authorities have been handed over a plan to prevent and be ready to deal with a possible avian influenza outbreak in the country. It is not clear if and when this will happen, but one can look to previous experiences and other events for clues as to how serious the threat really is for the American country.
Recent violent outbreaks in places such as Indonesia, which is now the world’s most heavily hit country, counting 47 human victims, are now followed by discoveries of low pathogenic bird flu viruses in some spots in U.S. The first one to raise fears was the case of two wild swans living on a lake in the state of Michigan. Routine tests found traces of a mild form of bird flu virus on the birds. The announcement was made by a White House spokesman, with details being given afterwards by officials from the Agriculture and Interior Departments. While the news was given high importance, experts claim there is no reason for concern, as the virus in question is in no way related to the Asian form and is no threat to humans. More recently, wild mallard ducks from Queen Anne’s County, Maryland, were found to carry the same pathogenic agent. The same reassurances were given by U.S. officials and although some people see this as a preview for possible bird flu outbreaks, health experts say mild and low pathogenic strains of avian influenza such as this one are common in the United States, as well as other countries. Since 1975, the low pathogenic strain of the H5N1 virus (the highly pathogenic form of which is causing high mortality in Asia) has been found on six other occasions on U.S. soil.
However, claims from other researchers warn that a more aggressive form of the disease could come to the American continent as early as this fall. Indeed, summer is a rather quiet period for the virus and the large number of cases in Asia during this time is due to the virus residing there for a long period of time. Come fall, large populations of wild fowl will cover thousands of miles on regular migratory paths. These birds are the natural carriers of the virus and are also quite resistant to it. Thus, they can carry the disease for great distances, without falling ill or succumbing to the disease and showing any signs of an infection. One particular reason for concern is the Alaskan territory. Its vicinity to the Asian continent makes it one of the possible points of entry for the disease. It is also a meeting place for water fowl, as wild birds from both Asia and America choose it as a feeding and nesting environment during the summer months. U.S. authorities have implemented a plan for the summer of 2006 which included the testing of more than 15,000 birds from 27 species in the region.
The program was extended to a nationwide level as you can read on www.bird-flu-center.com, as surveillance and constant testing is seen as an effective method of preparing for a possible outbreak of the disease. Biologists are set to test tens of thousands of birds. Locally, individual counties have also prepared pandemic plans and are carrying out drills for a worst case scenario. Hospitals are setting up special units for avian influenza patients, while schools and university campuses are also preparing. In the case of a pandemic, social disruption might force such institutions to close down, as they would be a suitable environment for the virus to spread. Another prevention measure used is banning poultry and poultry products imports from countries where avian flu has been found.
Although it is widely believed that some form of bird flu epidemic will eventually occur, there are those that play down the warnings. However, countries around the world choose to play the safety card and take prevention measures. Grim estimates say that if a pandemic occurs, it will kill 1.7 million Americans in the first year alone, as a vaccine takes months to produce after the start of an epidemic. On the other hand, we can still hope the disease will be contained and dealt with before before such an outcome is reached. It is, in the end, just a matter of wait and see.
For many years I taught my fifth grade students about the symbols of the United States of America. Over the years I have grown to love our national symbol, the American Bald Eagle. Many students are shocked to learn that our national symbol is not the flag, but the Bald Eagle.
In 1782 it was chose as the National Bird and then as our national emblem in 1787. You can find it on the Great Seal of the United States with its wings spread wide and a shield for his breast. The shield has 13 red and white stripes. In its right talon it holds an olive branch and, if you care to count, you will find that the olive branch has 13 leaves and 13 berries. This olive branch represents the United States desire for peace. In the Bald Eagles left talon is a bundle of 13 arrows that represent our willingness to fight for our freedom, if necessary. Finally in its beak is a scroll with the motto “E Pluribus Unum” which means ‘one out of many’.
The Bald Eagle also appears on the Presidential Seal, most coins, paper money and many stamps.
There are many types of eagles all over the world, but the American Bald Eagle only lives on the North American Continent. That is one reason that the Golden Eagle was not chosen because it lives in Europe, also.
It has been reported that at one of the first battles of the Revolutionary War the noise of the battle awoke sleeping eagles who flew from their nests circling the men fighting below. Their shrill cries blended with the cries of the fighting men. Some of them said they are “shrieking for freedom”.
When born the Bald Eagle is born it is gray and not the graceful bird of flight that you see five years later after it has developed it’s white tail feathers and head feathers.
The Bald Eagle is at the top of the food chain living in the tops of lofty mountains and near coasts and lakes where fish abound. They represent boundless freedom as they soar through the blue skies.
When you first see this bird he is really impressive. It has a 2 ½ – 3 foot body and can spread its sings 6-8 feet. When it spreads those wings and takes flight you catch your breath because they are so beautiful. To see their nests (aerie) in trees you would look for a tree that is usually over seventy five feet tall. The nests themselves are about five feet in diameter and just as deep.
There are many interesting facts about the Bald Eagle, such as its diving speed which can reach 100mph as it goes for a fish. At one time they were being killed in record numbers for their beautiful feathers. The government intervened and put them on the endangered list.
The term ‘eagle eyes’ refers to their ability to see 1 ½ miles away. We need to keep an eagle eye on our freedoms that are represented by this noble bird, The American Bald Eagle, so that we don’t loose them.
Consignment shops are expensive in location and have been recognized to carry fashionable wear at a fraction of its original cost.
A consignment is an act of consigning or transferring ones store to the buyer. This can be done for transfer of prisoners, shipping, or for sales in the stores. The consignment shop is an American English word for second-hand supplies or stores that present used goods at a lower cost.
Merchandise is often sold through a consignment shop such as antiques, equipments, athletic paraphernalia, books, automobiles, firearms, furniture, clothing, tools, musical instruments, music, and toys.
Consignment shops vary from thrift shops or charity shops which the original owner gives up the physical ownership as well as the legal name or title to the thing in charitable donations. All the income ends up going back into the frugality shops or given to charity. Most of the time, the income is split either 60/40 or 50/50 with the upper percentage going to the consignment shop. Prom dresses, tuxedos and wedding gowns and entourage should all be seen at consignment stores.

Do you desire world-wide exposure, missions expert? If you live in the United States, then you have multitudes from other countries going in and out of your country every day. The U.S. is famous for its fluctuating ethnic diversity. In the case of international college students, they stay for three to ten years soaking up everything they can. These students sometimes stay forever.
Since the American church is so fascinated with international missions I suppose all this international traffic must leave the U.S. feeling saturated with the kingdom of heaven, right? No, obviously not. However, we can at least be encouraged by this miraculous amount of international exposure because it demonstrates God’s faithfulness to plant us in the midst of spiritual opportunities.
If we Americans want to know God more, then we ought to obey Him more right now. We will dive deeper into Christ’s Divinity as we live on His terms wherever He has already placed us.
If we desire more widespread spiritual influence then we ought to obey Him right here, in the most ethnically diverse country in the world. We will find by experience that God extends our obedience into the furthest corners of the world by His own authority.
For whatever reason, right now the world’s attention is fixed on the United States. People are infected far and wide by the American dream. So we might as well take this opportunity to tell them, while they are listening, that the American dream is bunk, but Jesus Christ is Lord. While they are still watching, let them see us cast off shallow superficialities in favor of embracing the eternal extravagance of Christ. While they are watching, let the peoples perceive that, with God, anything is possible.
I don’t care about getting attention for attention’s sake. But it is a fact, regardless, that the U.S. is currently holding the world’s attention. God doesn’t need the United States per se, nor does He care one whit about the things men admire. But we might as well use what we’ve got as long as we’ve got it. The possibilities are endless for us when we set out to live as God’s stronghold of truth.
Reality is that the U.S. is the world’s leading exporter of western, materialistic, distracted culture. We Americans, churched or un-churched, make Godless living so attractive that the rest of the world cannot resist it.
In other words, this church-laden country is having anything but a Godly effect on the world. And the fruits of what we really believe are self-evident the world over.
Countries are trading in millennia of traditions and values in favor of snapping up every western comfort and innovation they can get their hands on. So it goes that western culture settles for nothing less than squashing every other culture under its floral-painted, steel-toe boots.
My experience at Arizona State University has been that international students require a very small amount of time to soak up all the glories of our individualistic, career-driven mindset. Students may still reserve a fondness for their own ways, but they cannot avoid being heavily influenced by the American way. They resist American ideals as effectively as a man might stand his ground against a 200-foot tidal wave.

The decrease in the value of the dollar was welcome news to international skiers earlier this year.
United States ski resorts reported seeing more international visitors than previous recent years. They credit this primarily to the lower exchange rate of the dollar vs. other currencies. People like getting the most bang for their buck, no matter what buck their currency represents.
During the recently passed ski season, guests booked extended stays months in advance. Resorts reported that skiers who would generally stay two to four days have extended their visits to seven to 10 days due to getting better prices for their currency.
International guests also shopped and spent more money at local stores and restaurants and on rental equipment.
Some resorts reported that the number of Canadian skiers was up by 20 percent. Stowe and Smuggler’s Notch reported stronger bookings from Europe during the Easter holiday break. Eastern United States ski resorts had a very good 2007-2008 ski season due to an early Easter holiday, steady winter storms and a weak dollar.
Now that skiing has come to an end for this season, holiday goers will be looking for great summertime destinations. The dollar is still lower in value than it has been in years, making the United States a more viable tourist destination. Many hotels are already booked for prime summer travel months. Theme park operators are looking forward to the potential influx of tourists due to current exchange rates.
Many favourite ski resort destinations also double as favourite summertime destinations. Most resorts offer great summer activities as well as ski packages.
North American ski resorts offer summertime camping, fishing, hiking and other outdoor activities.
Children’s camps are one of the more popular summertime activities at resorts. Several favourites offer summertime concerts and other special events. Some special events include mountain biking and the occasional poker run.
Prime holiday destinations, such as the Balearic and Canary Islands could potentially see a decrease in holiday traffic this year. The typical holiday on the island of your choice will be more expensive due to current exchange rates.
Some of the more popular summertime destinations in the United States are Florida, Colorado, California, Washington D.C. and New York.
One of Florida’s main family attractions is Disney World. Disney World is one of the most visited family holiday destinations in the world. Other Florida destinations include Daytona Beach, Miami, Busch Gardens and Kissimmee.
Colorado, Washington D.C. and New York offer great historic and educational holiday opportunities for families looking for more than roller coasters and swimming pools.
Current monetary exchange rates as of April 2008 allow the purchase of a $75 theme park ticket for 47 euros or just under 38 sterling.
The current decreased value of the dollar allows great potential for more international visitors to enjoy an American vacation during 2008.
Cheaper airfares from many destinations in Europe will help offset the current exchange rate for Europeans who enjoy the occasional weekend trip to the Balearic Islands.
When preparing and planning your summer vacation, look for the lowest fees for exchanging currency. Banks often charge fewer fees than exchange bureaus and other companies. Using a credit card or debit card can also help offset the fees usually involved with currency exchange.
Every year many people decide to move abroad. Throughout history, America has always been one of the favoured destinations and even today continues to attract a large proportion of people in search of a different way of life.
Although, at one time moving to the United States often meant cutting communication with family members and friends; today modern technology means this is no longer an issue.
Of course, one of the easiest ways to keep in contact with someone abroad is through e-mail. E-mail has revolutionised the way we communicate. Less than twenty years ago, this communication method was only being used by a small number of university attendees, as well as a few technology enthusiasts. Today, almost everyone has an e-mail address.
Even though e-mail is still an extremely popular form of communication, in recent years many of us have made the move over to social networking sites. In fact, today more than 60 per cent of Americans use social networking sites to stay in contact with friends and family.
Social networking sites are very similar to e-mail, although they do offer a few additional benefits when it comes to keeping in contact with friends. Like e-mail, it is possible to send messages to your friends, but social networking sites also provide a static page which allows you to check at any time what’s currently happening in your friend’s life.
Typical items displayed on this page may include photos, music that they’re currently interested in and a list of friends that they’re also keeping in contact with. In short, social networking sites manage to provide a slightly more personal touch than e-mail and are especially beneficial for keeping in contact with large numbers of friends at once.
Of course, e-mail and social networking sites may be revolutionary technologies for keeping in contact, but the phone is still considered an ideal solution too. Since 1927 when the first transatlantic phone call took place between New York and London, phone calls between the United States and the rest of the world have become commonplace.
Nowadays more and more people are starting to use VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services in order to cut costs when keeping in contacting with friends and family in the United States. Thanks to the rapid growth of the internet and improvement of data transfer via broadband, it is now possible to take advantage of cheap calls to United States.
America has always proven a popular destination for immigration and today this trend continues. Indeed, keeping in contact with friends is now not only easier, but cost-effective too.
Analyzing wealth in the USA I can’t help saying a few words about the economic development of the country, because the prosperity of the United States fully depends on it. The U.S. economy is based on free enterprise system. The government places regulations on economic practices. The U.S. economy arose due to the stubborn labor of American people, the appearance of market relations, great consumers demand. The country’s productivity has grown during the last 70 years.
Today the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP) is about 13,049 trillion dollars and it continues to grow. Federal budget per capita is 5,740$ with public debt 18,956$ and personal income per capita 22,000$. The economic situation during the year 2005 is considered to be strong in general, but there is some fear because of the Iraq War, high oil prices and so on.
But from time to time the U.S. economy faces the problems, such as recession, depression and inflation. And one of the points of American instability is the financing of the Healthcare system of the country.
Healthcare in the U.S.A.
American healthcare is one of the largest branches of industry in the country. The expenses on health protection grow incredibly with the increasing rate. In 1994 Americans spent 800 milliards on healthcare, but this increasing numbers occurred mainly because of the governmental programs. To my mind the country threw its money to the winds, because thousands and even millions of people were left without a proper treatment and all of them suffered from a lack of necessary healthcare, as the country did not guarantee publicly-funded medicine for potential patients.
Nearly 20 per cents of Gross domestic product (GDP) of the United States are spent on Healthcare program. The expenses overtake the growing of national economy and by the year 2015 they will form more than 20 per cents. For comparison I should mention that in 2004 only 16 per cents of GDP were spent for these purposes. And according to the research work the experts got a result that the national expenses will increase on 7,2% during the next 10 years. By the prognosis of experts, the United States will spend nearly 446 milliards on medical provision, while in 2004 it was only 188 milliards.
The government meets the expenses with the help of two main state programs: “Medicaid” and “Medicare”. According to the program “Medicare” life and medical insurance is carried out for all Americans, who are older than 65 years, who has serious health disorders, for example, problems with kidneys, diseases of blood, gastro-intestinal tract and nervous system. The program “Medicaid” provides services and insurance for medically needy Americans, mainly women (during pregnancy, not after birth), children from poor large families, for those who want to live, but can not afford to pay for treatment. Besides this program pays for staying at the houses for aged people.
Unfortunately nowadays costs on payment for doctors’ service rose to 22%, nearly 16% – for medicament treatment and so on.
As a result people have a lot of objections and are subjected to agitation. Many of them came to understanding that healthcare in their country is not effective at all.
Here are the examples. The United States have about the most terrible infant mortality compared to other highly developed countries, while spending of finance for healthcare is the highest in the world.
The U.S. contains less than 5 per cent of the world’s population, but spends 42 per cents of world’s healthcare expenses. But at the same time the American nation is not the healthiest one among others. A lot of people still wait for the planned operations for several months and even years, people can’t visit simple specialist (internist, dermatologist, cardiologist, oculist, etc.) without a record and insurance policy. It seems that it is a real absurd, because all of us have a right for life, treatment and medical support according to the Constitution.
No doubt insurance is very important and necessary, but not in America, where people pay huge extreme, all in all incredible fees, taxes, money for insurance to the government and never get the proper medical help and treatment. The goal of all insurance companies is to make people believe that the law guarantees them that they will get the highest quality and effective health care. Most Americans receive health insurance through the special benefits programs, provided by their employers. The employers pay 3,3% tax plus 1,45% tax for Medicare. But there is the other side of a medal. Some people do not earn enough to cover all their house and public bills and 75% of them have a constant job, but insurance is too expensive for them. So the country shows us a principle, that insurance and especially in medical field is a privilege for wealthy people. Nearly 43 million Americans exist without insurance policy and approximately 42 millions are underinsured. But wait a minute. I speak about the money that people pay to the government voluntarily and where are the money (nearly 20 per cents of Gross domestic product) that the country spends on Healthcare?
The explanation is funny… One third of the budget money is focused not on people’s health, but on plastic surgery, cosmetology and other luxury. The remaining portion of money are directed and used in scientific research work. Of course this money are used with good and noble purpose, but the history shows that several dozens and even hundreds of years should pass before something incredible new to discovered. That is why we are to believe that once American financing will give fruit and this work will justify all the inconceivable investments.
Conclusion
But now it is obvious that Healthcare in the United States is a real burden on economy. Therefore the government should properly use the budget money and develop a program that will include different ways of healthcare: inpatient, outpatient, emergency, long term, eye care, prescription of drugs, mental health services, dentistry and so on. Patients should have the choice where to be treated: at the hospital, at a clinic or stay at home, then what doctor to choose, what medicines to use in this or that case. All in all a significant changes, reconstruction and restructuring are needed to be done in Healthcare and economy. Before it is not done the country’s economy can fall down, because of money that are burned and thrown to the winds. So the state budget should be distributed in a smart way. And only under this condition and circumstances we can expect the nation to be healthier and wealthier simultaneously. And during the next couple of years the tremendous growth of American economy and wealth will only continue to double. Customized written term papers Custom Essay Buy custom essays
For a country as big and diversified as the US, adoption records are very important to keep.
What is adoption?
Adoption is the lawful act of permanently admitting a child with a parent or parents other than the birth mother or father. In accordance to an adoption order a parent or parents are liable to transfer parental responsibilities and rights over the child onto the adoptive parent or parents. Once an adoption is finalized, there is no authorized distinction between adopted children and those born to the parents. According to adoption records adoption has gained persistent standing in American society.
Who adopts
At present, studies say that in the United States 1 in 5 couples of childbearing age encounter grave problems in trying to conceive a baby. For these people, being able to boast the joy of being a parent becomes a goal which is hard to pin down. They seek an adoption as a substantial alternate to their inability to ever become birth parents. Having a child to love and care for is what brings joy to millions of infertile couples around the world. Adoption is also undertaken by individuals and couples who wish to give an orphan child the love and importance of a parent in their poignant lives.
Adoption in the United States
1992 was the end year National Adoption totals were collected in the USA, however adoption records from foster care homes and other non-government bodies allows us to get a rough estimate on the numbers. Back then 127,000 annual adoptions in the U.S was recorded. As of 2002, United States consisted of 1.5 million adopted, which was over 2% of all US Children. Adoptive parents have to pay virtually nothing to US$40,000 to adopt a child.
In recent years International Adoption through agencies has also become very popular in the United States. Amid 1971 and 2001, U.S. citizens adopted 265,677 children from other countries. The figure of children pending adoption decreased from 132,000 to 118,000 during 2000 to 2004.
In 2005 the U.S. Department of State declared that 22,728 visas were given to orphans coming into the United States, 7,906 being from China(Mainland), followed by Russia with 4,639 and Guatemala 3,783.
Adoption law vary from state to state, and federal laws also influence many procedures prior and after, connected with the adoption record process. It is important that placing and adopting parents, as well as those looking for family members are aware of legislations beforehand.
The writing of United States history books has been dominated by status quo educators and traditionalist leaning historians. It seems that thousands of them have written thousands of books with very little diversity of philosophical perspective and even less regard for a host of uncomplimentary facts. If someone should voice the opinion that United States history books read like a conspiracy of white power mythologists, he or she could turn to a mountain of evidence for support. No country’s history is as reproachless as traditionalists make that of the United States of America seem when they write and teach United States history.
But the perspective of the traditionalist educators is now being challenged. One book that looks at United States history from less than a complimentary perspective is Mba Mbulu’s An Introduction to White History: The History of White America. Unlike many historians of American history, Mba Mbulu supplements his university studies with years of independent research, and is able to present a picture of American history that will be met with such subjective knee jerk reactions when read by status quo Americans that I feel impelled to write about it.
Mba Mbulu’s An Introduction to White History is a summary of the concepts, principles and motivating factors that led to the establishment and expansion of the United States of America. Since it is usually implied that “American” history is the history of “superior” white people, this precise title makes it clear that such is not the case. There are several histories that make up American history, and the history of white Americans is only one of them.
What An Introduction to White History brings to the forefront is the unusually powerful and concentrated role finances and the profit motive have played in the political and social development of white America. It is white Americans’ unusual preoccupation with finances and profits that distinguishes them and their institutions from those of all other Americans. It behooves all other Americans to not underestimate that unusual preoccupation when determining the essence of their relations with white America, and it behooves teachers and other educators to account for that unusual preoccupation when they teach their students.
One can acquire a more complete basis for understanding the underlying principles that guide this writing by reading Chapter One of Ten Lessons: An Introduction to Black History (also written by Mba Mbulu).
Traditionalist educators in schools and colleges in the United States should give more consideration to how nonwhite Americans view this country. They might not like the contrary perspectives they are made aware of, but that might create the jolt that motivates them to be less subjective and better teachers. Traditionalist educators should expand their field of vision if their objective is to educate instead of indoctrinate. They should culture the ability to accept the intellectual equality and legitimacy of perspectives other than their own. Mba Mbulu’s An Introduction to White History: The History of White America could be the dose of reality so many of them so sorely need.
